So I have found more photos of your chicken run, sorry to have so many questions......are the posts in cement?
ReplyDeleteThey are not I wanted to be able to move it if I ever needed to without having to dig up the posts. We burried the chicken wire all the way around about 1ft deep. I plan to reinforce the bottom with hardware cloth also, to keep any predators from reaching in.
ReplyDeleteso what size is the posts at the corners, it appears the sides are mostly 2x4's. As soon as I saw your pics, I searched my local craigslist for a screen door! Many Many thanks for sharing your chicken run pics :)
ReplyDeleteThe posts are 4x4s except for around the door it is framed with 2x4s. The top middle & bottom pieces that are parallel to the ground are 2x4s. We covered the top with wire to protect from hawks.
ReplyDeletethat helps ALOT! So did you bury the posts at all (as in, in the dirt, I know you said you didn't put in cement) or is this like a "rectangular box" that sits on the ground? We currently have just a temp "pvc structure" that is covered in wildlife netting. We are on just an acre, in a neighborhood, fenced in back yard, so our risks for predators are maybe a little less then others, but for me I need to be extra sure, I am not quite meant for "farm life" these chickens are more like pets (I laugh at myself, thinking about what my great-grandfather (whom I never met), he had HUGE HUGE farm in VA, near NC border, what he might say if he knew the attention that 10 chickens get, that they have names, and as long as I have anything to do with it, will never be dinner themselves, hehehe), also with my 3 and 4 year old daughters involved, not ready for them to see the remains of a chicken that fell victim to a predator. okay that was way more then you asked for. Again, I can't think you enough for your feedback, I can't wait to get started:)
ReplyDeleteI buried the 2 posts that are closest to the coop about 6 inches the rest are just sitting on the ground. My predator risk is pretty high I live in a wooded area surrounded by open farm fields, so we risk coyotes, hawks, snakes, possums, and raccoons. You're welcome I enjoy talking to other chicken fanatics. These are my first chickens also and I LOVE them. They are probably a bit over spoiled :). My husband threatens that if they don't lay eggs they will be dinner, but there's NO WAY that's happening! I live in NC near the VA line!!!
